Stripping an offer back to what the customer actually sees

The phrase "an offer without stockings" is our shorthand for an offer with nothing padding it out: no layered conditions, no decorative extras, no fine print hiding the real deal. Think of a shop window on a busy Bogotá street. A passer-by gives it a second or two. In that moment they need to understand what is on sale, why it matters to them and what to do next. Anything that slows that understanding works against the sale, however clever it looked in the planning meeting.

Many campaigns lose clarity in the same predictable ways. A discount comes with three exceptions. A bundle is so complicated that customers cannot work out what they are paying for. A headline tries to say five things at once. Each addition seems reasonable on its own, but together they cover up the one message that should carry the whole campaign.

How to test whether your offer is bare enough

  • The one-sentence check: write the offer as a single plain sentence a customer could repeat to a friend. If you need a second sentence, something can probably go.
  • The distance check: look at your poster, banner or social post from across the room or at thumbnail size. If the core benefit disappears, the design is carrying too much.
  • The condition count: list every requirement attached to the offer, such as minimum spend, dates or eligible products. Keep the ones that protect the business and drop the rest.
  • The next-step check: make sure there is one obvious action, whether that is visiting, calling, ordering or booking, rather than several competing ones.

Clarity is not the same as cheapness

A stripped-back offer does not have to mean a lower price. Often the most effective change is to state the existing value more honestly and visibly, so the customer sees immediately what they get. Premium brands use restraint as much as discount retailers do. A single well-lit product with a short line of copy can signal confidence better than a crowded display.

If you would like to put this into practice, our workshops walk teams through rewriting real offers step by step, and our portfolio shows how simple, window-style messaging can look across different channels.
